The Honda company began in 1946 in Hamamatsu, Japan with the foundation of the Honda Technical Research Institute which was established to develop 2 cycle motorbike engines. The first motorbike engine was produced in 1947. In 1948 the Honda Motor Company Ltd was formed and the first store, with six employees, was opened in America in 1959. in 1960 the production of motorcycles at the Suzuki factory began and in 1963 the first sports car was sold in Japan. Honda entered the field of Formula one racing in 1964 and in the same year began production of cars at their factory in Sayama in Japan. In 1978 the first Honda Prelude was produced and in 1979 Honda began manufacture in the United States. The first Honda Accord was sold in 1982 and in 2001 is the best selling car in America.

Today Honda employs over 25,000 americans and over 100,000 workers in authorised automobile, power equipment and motorcycle dealerships directly rely on Honda for employment. In addition many more are employed in suppliers to Honda of parts and materials.

A specially built Honda Theater provides lectures and programs by remowned scientists. Through the Collegiate Women Sports Program Honda presents awards to athletes in twelve sports and awards the Honda-Broderick Cup to the woman athlete who has demonstrated superior athletic achievement and contributed to school and community as well as achieving scholastic excellence. The Honda Inspiration Award is given to an outstanding woman athlete who has overcome obstacles through strength of character to achieve excellence in her sport.
